    Backup Aborted-Macrium unable to back up disk

    After working fine for several months, Macrium Reflect Free is unable to back up my 4tb data drive. I have run disk check from the command line, run Western Digital Lifeguard diagnostics, Crucial diagnostics, still no luck. No problems with windows or third party software reading and writing to the drive, only Macrium has the problem. Plenty of free space on the target drive. The backup runs to about 98% complete, then aborts and shows an error pop-up. Any ideas?

    The error message from the log file reads:

    Backup aborted! - Unable to read
    from disk - Error Code 23 - Data error (cyclic redundancy

    16 GB Ram
    225 GB Crucial SSD System drive
    4 TB Western Digital Black Data drive
    8 TB Western Digital MyBook USB Back-up drive

    This suggests your disk may be failing. Try Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) - best for an instant comprehensible short report on its GUI.

    Else anything that checks SMART parameters. E.g. HD Tune, Crystal Diskinfo.

    Note: such utilities often perform background disk monitoring - ideal for notifying you of degraded disks.

    Yes I read that article on Macrium's site, and followed thier suggestions. As I stated in my post, I have run several disk diagnostics, all show no prblems, specifically the Smart Data is clean.

    a. a surface scan using one of those tools.
    b. Hard Disk Sentinel (trial).

    Ok, I should have been more specific. The Macrium web site recommends a surface scan with CheckDisk, the Microsft utility built in to Windows, which I did and found no bad sectors. I think I will go back to AOMEI Backupper, it reads the disk with no problem, just very slow and resource hog. Thanks for your help.

    Test your disk as I've described.... You do not want to continue with a possibly defective disk. You should make sure you don't.

    You came to this forum for advice- if you ignore it, there's little point...

    Chkdsk does not check the whole disk, and Macrium clearly detected a problem. It is a more robust program than Aomei Backupper (I've used both).

    CheckDisk run from the command line with the proper parameters i.e.; /f /r /x, does check every cluster on the drive. There are many disk utilities available, they don't do anything CheckDisk can't do except provide user friendly GUI.

    I agree that Macrium is the better application, it seems to be incompatible with something installed on my system, I hoped someone might have encountered and solved the same issue. The only advice you have given me is what is easily found by searching the internet. Again, thanks for your advice.

    At least run the WD diagnostic "Data Lifeguard" against that disk. If its still under warranty, Western Digital will require you to provide a Data Lifeguard report. Run the surface check.

    I ran the surface checkwith Data Lifeguard, no bad clusters found. There is nothing wrong with the drive, for some reason Macrium has the problem. If Windows can read the drive, and reports no bad clusters, Macrium would have to be running in its own envoirnment to find something Windows can't.
