    Updating Windows 10 v.1709...

    I have a system that has Windows 10 Pro v. 1709.

Can it be updated directly to v.1809, or the v.1803 required to be installed first? Or rather...

What would be the most trouble free way to get this system to the latest version?

    TIA...

I have done it by using the MCT/Media Creation Tool to get the latest Version. I get both the Bootable USB drive using a 16GB to format and install both the x86 and x64 on the same drive and also get the .iso for both x86 and x64 to create the DVD+R/DL disc. Can be handy to have either media available when I visit a clients site plus I can store the offline update installers on the USB drive.

I should add that the media doesn't have to be booted, can run setup.exe from within Windows File Explorer. There's 3 such files, one in the root and one each in the x86 and x64 Folders.

What modifications had you made to Windows 1709 that it has not already spontaneously upgraded?
Had there been upgrade error messages or codes?

    Thanks Berton...

I am pretty familiar with the different ways of installing/updating Windows 10, usually the 64-bit version. With all of the issues that the 1803 and 1809 versions had, I just wouldn't want the version update issues cumulatively hitting me.

Generally, updates do include previous updates, just not certain how it is with the feature updates when one of them had not been installed?

I've just inherited this system, workgroup no domain, and the feature updates had been disabled in the group policy. Prior to enabling the feature update, just want to make certain that it won't break it. Yes, I do have a MR image backup...

You can skip Windows versions on upgrades.
The server should know the KB numbers that are prerequisites for other KB numbers.

If there is an upgrade failure the Windows 10 iso is better than using the computers Windows update at producing a more useful error code.

    Before upgrading:
    a) Uninstall all antivirus / firewall software other than Microsoft Windows defender
    b) Uninstall all drive encryption software other than Microsoft software
    c) Place the computer in clean boot:
Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts | Tutorials
    d) Remove all drives other than the Windows drive.
    e) Make sure that there is > 25 GB and preferably 27 GB free space on the Windows drive before the upgrade

Will the MCT USB drive based installation media fetch the prerequisite KBs as well? I haven't looked yet, if the monthly patches had been applied or not...

There are two choices when using MCT:
Update during the upgrade or update after the upgrade.
    Select update after the upgrade.

Thanks zbook for your explanations, much appreciated...

I'll go with v.1809 via the USB and update after the upgrade...
