I did the network reset on the 1803 computer. Sigh.

It does not see ANY computers. It does see some other stuff (printer/scanner, bluray player, router). I've only been running the 4 computers, as listed in post 1. Each one has been signed out from the Homegroup.

Not one of the 4 computers can see any other one anymore.

This does not strike me as progress.
I didn't know if his fix would work for you or not. I had already ran the reset and it didn't break my sharing/network. I wouldn't have done all 4 computers at once. I mean it is up to you totally but getting one that works right before taking down others seemed best.

Anyway, if you have taken them from the Homegroup, we have to find a way to get those shares working. I assume you have been through all the Private Network, sharing options, NTFS permissions. The services should run properly on 1709 so that is not the issue. Check that they are all on the same WORKGROUP to start.

If you can bring a laptop next to the desktop you are using. Let's try to get one working then you apply the changes to all. :)

EDIT: Confirmed through a friend. Please do check the two services as well in 1709.

    iamc3k,

Sorry I didn't read the entire topic. I thought you were having an 1803 network problem. For the oddball things happening to your 1709 or earlier machines, try this on one of them:

    1) Go to Action Center All settings and type in a search for power. Select the one for "Choose a power plan".
    2) On the left side of the window which opens, select Choose what the power buttons do.
    3) On the Define power.... page which opens, select Change settings which are currently unavailable.
    4) UNCHECK the box for Turn on fast start (recommended).
    5. Save the changes and then power off the computer using the Windows command not the power switch.
    6. Turn it back on and maybe some of your problems will be solved.

When fast start is turned on, the machine will only do a hibernate (it is powered off but the current Windows kernel is being saved on your hard drive and loaded when booting). If you turn off fast start, a clean Windows 10 will be loaded when the machine is turned back on.

Most of the time it doesn't matter and the speed boost when booting up is nice to have. But, it can occasionally cause you some problems. Let me know if it helps.

@iamc3k I believe you know how to setup sharing but I am going to post these as a check list for you to make sure the 1709 is setup properly.

Turn On or Off File and Printer Sharing in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials

Turn On or Off Password Protected Sharing in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials

Once you have made sure all services and settings are correct on the 1709 machine, reboot it and check if the sharing works. If not please post back so we can take further steps. :)

    Gents,

I am NOT ignoring your advice or disappearing. My work has called and I must go. I will return to this issue(s) on Monday.

I greatly appreciate the assistance I'm receiving. I'm sure this mess can be sorted. I'm happy to start with the most basic of approaches and eliminate all the possibilities which are preventing this LAN from working with Windows 10's networking.

Thanks, and I'll report back on Monday.

    Cheers,
    Ken

Thanks. Everyone gets busy some times and I figured that was the case.

I will try to be here to answer when you are back. :)

Okay, I'm back in front of the computers.

My 1803 (Kids) can see my laptop, and vice versa. So, those two seem functional. (I've got some questions about what I'm seeing, but that's secondary to just getting the computers hooked up to one another.)

They cannot see any other computers (4) currently up and on the network.

Another 1709 computer (not the laptop), named "KenII" can see and access all the shared folders on the 1803 (Kids) computer.

Kids is totally unaware of the presence of KenII.

Thoughts? (I'll gradually add in the other desktops and laptops later.)

I would say it has to do with 1) the shares cannot be removed like you posted the other day.. to be added back with proper sharing and security or 2) renaming of the computers.

In regards to number 1... I think the homegroup shares are not setup properly for 1803 sharing.

In regards to number 2... another user had a problem very similar and renaming all his computers, coupled with some reboots fixed his issue.

Also in regards to both, I am not sure if the 1709 computers have the Function Discovery Resource Publication service running as it should. A buddy of mine says it is hit and miss with it running properly as it is in 1803 and why we had to change it to automatic delayed start from manual and start it.

I know it will be a pain, but I would recommend these steps:

    1. Make sure the service is running properly
    2. Rename the computer and reboot
    3. Test from 1803 to see if the shares are now visible. Reboot 1803 just in case and see.
    4. If that does not fix it, removing the shares setup by homegroup and re adding them using Computer Management.
    5. Then reboot and see if the other computer can see the shares now.

You're welcome. I hope some the post above yours will help. I have to run for a few hours. I may or may not be on again tonight. If you get through everything I posted and still no success, please post back. I will answer as soon as I get on the PC again. Good luck :)

    Thanks.

A complication? The computer I'm looking at (KenII) which can see Kids, but Kids cannot see KenII: well, Windows will force it to update from 1709 to 1803 upon the next reboot. Gotta love it.

So, I'll reboot it, and see what happens...
