How to Turn On or Off Speech Services and Typing Suggestions in Windows 10

In Windows 10, you can use your voice to do things like talk to Cortana or Store applications, and use your typing history and handwriting patterns to create a local user dictionary that makes better suggestions for you. Microsoft will use your voice input to make cloud-based speech services work even better.

To use cloud-based speech recognition (ex: Hey Cortana), Getting to know you (speech services and typing suggestions) must be turned on because speech services exist both in the cloud and on your device. When your Diagnostic and usage data setting is set to Full, your inking and typing input data is sent to Microsoft, and this data is used in the aggregate to improve the inking and typing platform for all users. As part of inking and typing on your device, Windows creates a user dictionary that stores unique words like names you write, which helps you type and ink more accurately.

When Getting to know you is turned off, you can't speak to Cortana, and your typing and inking user dictionary will be cleared. Speech services that don't rely on the cloud, like Windows Speech Recognition, will still work. Typing suggestion and handwriting recognition using system dictionary will also continue to work.

Starting with Windows 10 build 17115, Windows 10 has gotten a new privacy screen settings layout.

This tutorial will show you how to turn on or off speech services and typing suggestions (Getting to know you) for your account in Windows 10.
