Hello safd, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

If Automatic Maintenance isn't running in "Security and Maintenance", then it sounds like something else may be running instead.

Leave Task Manager open to see if anything shows running when this happens again.

I disabled the defrag service (disabling its function from the program itself didn't work) and seems to remain idle! Doesn't it start by maintenance though?

I am wondering why you disabled it.

It can be started by Automatic Maintenance, but can also be started independently if needed as well.

Automatic Maintenance turning itself back on!

Brink's Reg edit file to halt Automatic Maintenance worked a treat until recently. The way I test for AutoMaint being off is to try to start it manually; sure enough, nothing happens. Maybe I'm missing something, but recently I have checked the kill function, found it still to prevent manual starting, yet the date for the last Maintenance continues to advance. I felt I was in control until sometime this month (Dec. 2018). I had manually run Maintenance on Dec. 4, but found on one Win10 machine the date had advanced to Dec. 21, and on the other to Dec. 26. In both cases the function still could not be started manually. I wonder if there some Windows Defender update that has managed to bypass the Reg edits somehow.
