Yes, you can make the new account an administrator while signed in to the temp profile of the old account.

Just to verify, have you already gone through the steps in the tutorial here on the first post to try and fix the old account while signed in to the temp profile?

    If so, what happened?

Yes, you can safely delete the TEMP profile folders in the "C:\Users" folder.

It would be better to fix your old account if able so you don't have to setup everything again in a new account.

If you absolutely want to use the new account instead, then:

    1) While signed in to the old account (temp profile), make the new account an administrator.

    2) Sign out of the old account.

    3) Sign in to the new account, and verify it's an administrator.

    4) Copy over anything you wanted (ex: docs, pics, music, etc....) from the old account to the new account.

    5) Delete the old account.

When logged in to the old account as administrator, I can click to change another account and make the new account an administrator. It does not ask to assign a password. When I "switch user" and select the new account, it asks for a password, which I don't have. When I enter the password that works for the old account it returns an error so I cannot get into the new account. So I "switch user" to the old account, enter the password and am able to get in; then I change the new account back to standard and can "switch user" to get back in to the new account, but when I try to do anything that requires administrator privileges it loads the sign in message for the old account and requires me to enter the password, which then permits me to proceed.

It sounds like you may not have added a password for the new account.

Have you verified that the new account is shown as an administrator while signed in to the new account?

I did follow the steps in the first post tutorial, including backing up and whoami. While in temporary account, the system was very unstable and the cursor would roll and I would get some black SOD. I ran check disk and System File Checker and turned off the firewall. I also restored to different points. Each restart would bring me back to the "We can't log in" message and a temporary account. But the boot time went from about 20 minutes to 1 or 2. I believe that the panes in my ProfileList at first did match one of the arrangements in the first post tutorial but I'm not sure which. But it changed with each reboot to show an increasing number of multiple TEMP accounts and continued to show the old account, correctly named in the ProfileImagePath. Following the instructions, I did change State Value data from 8 to 0 at one point.

Unable to get past the "We can't log in" message and a temporary account, and going through the postings in this thread, it became clear that I should try a new account, which did work.

Everyone with this problem should heed your advice to be sure and back up EVERYTHING onto an external hard drive. Not just what are obviously documents and images and program setup executables. Browser histories and bookmarks, documents linked or downloaded from proprietary web-based sources, program storage folders, and other very important material will be in locations and file types that many of us are not familiar with and may disregard when backing up. I backed up all of the folders and files contained in the user folder and then also the entire user folder. This proved very helpful as I tried to figure out what was what as I copied back into the new account

Everything is working right. Many thanks, again. After a couple days of the new account accessing all of my data, running all of my programs, and selectable at login, I deleted the old account user folder and old ProfileList account registries. At first, the old account continued to appear on the login screen a couple of times, showing the "Can't login" and "temporary account" messages, but the new user account was also showing as an optional login. Presently, the old account does not appear at login, only the new account. I have only the new account in the ProfileList registry, at login, and in the user folders.
